A Letter To My Readers

Dear Readers,

Greetings and Salutations,

I hope these words find you in the best of health. I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to read what I've decided to share with you all.

I'm new to all of this so please bare with me. Hopefully you will have as much fun reading about my life as I do writing about it. You will read about all kinds of different types of people and events, both inside and outside of the prison I now call home, as well as how I ended up here. Some of the stuff you read might make you sad, angry, or even make you laugh, and that's the point. I want to show the world my life unfiltered, and maybe you''ll understand why people shouldn't be so quick to judge those life me.

I guess I should start by introducing myself. My name is Victor Lizardi, but in the  streets and here in prison everyone just calls me Lucky Charmz or Lucky for short, except the cops, they call me Lizardi or inmate #261379. I'm from South Phoenix and I'm currently serving two life sentences without the chance of parole, plus a few extra decades for shits and giggles here in the Arizona Department of Corrections. Now it's not for anything crazy, just your average run of the mill charges we catch here in the desert like armed robbery, stolen cars, guns, and how could I forget a couple murder cases, Don't let that fool you, I'm a really nice guy once you get to know me.

The idea to write came from my teacher and others who know me, as there always saying I need to write a book. My life has been crazy as hell and sometimes I don't think people would want to hear about it, but the more I learn the more I realize my teacher is right, it could do some goodm for the readers and myself.

Now please don't assume you know me because you've read a bit about me or you've heard second hand stories about those like me, wait to make a decision until you really get to know me. Don't be scared or shy to start a dialogue. I want you to feel free to write and ask me about stuff; it's the best way to learn. I know I might be a little rougher around the edges than the typical bad boy, but I promise you, you'll see I'm a really good guy once you get to know me. I know what most people think of prisons and those of us who temporarily live inside of them. I assure you, you don't know half of what you think you know!

This place is nothing like Shawshank Redemption or American Me, Trust me, it's not some version of Mad Max's Thunder Dome. Although it would definitely make things more interesting if we could go through chow hall suspended from bungie cords with make shift weapons just to get this bullshit prison tries to call food. Better yet two men enter, one man leaves the Thunder Dome with the chocolate hunnybun! That would be funny as hell!

Come on folks this is real life, not Hollywood! Reality is prison is kinda of boring, unless you like playing cards and watching TV. If that's the case than you would fit right in and have a blast. I got bored of that quickly and turned to educating myself. I found a love for writing and reading and now I want to put that to use in a way that could help bridge the gap between society and the ones it condemns. I'm just tired of hearing about how people get out of prison just to be denied a second or even third chance. Most people out there start judging us wrongfully. We've been judged enough! Most of us have the years to prove it.

Please don't stop looking at us because we went to prison, keep looking and see what we did while we were in there. Please don't quit listening to us when you hear about our past, keep listening and hear what we have planned for our future. Please don't stop looking at us when you see our tattoos, keep looking a see our character. I'll bet you would be surprised at what you find.

People are always telling me how a lepord can't change it spots or a zebra can't change its stripes, well I guess it's a good thing us convicts idolize the butterfly. You see a butterful doesn't start of life that way. they have to work hard to get there. A young hot head living life all wrong (according to society) would be a gentle way one could've described me, but I would just say I was a caterpillar. Now this cell is my cocoon, but unlike most I'll probably never get the change to fly free from beyond these bars and show off who I've become. Instead I'll show how my transformation came about, from a young caterpillar to a mature butterfly.

I hope you will read what I've written with an open mind and will reserve judgement until you know more about me and the life many people like me live. With that said, I hope you enjoy these stories from my life and find a few laughs along the way. Maybe you will even find a better understanding of the lifestyle I lived, even if you don't agree with it. As you read my letters and work, just know empathy and understanding our the key to a human's success, without it we fail as a whole.

Respectfully,

Victor Lizardi a.k.a Lucky
